Congratulations to Ghent! Their very strong team is now in possession of the 4 Cubes since January 29, 2010 (report). Since that date, they have successfully defended the trophy and the title of Belgium's Best Backgammon Club for three times already!

The 1st Brussels Friendly (with thanks to Nardy Pillards for finding the name) on Thursday 23th December suffered from a very heavy snowblow and understandably some players coming from far or abroad couldn't manage to come. Still, 11 players defied the weather conditions to reach café `Le Montmartre' for a main / consolation / last chance tourney.

In the main (playing to 5), the draw was very Friendly for organizer Guy Van Middelem who got a `bye' in the first round and met Dominique Stuyck in the second round. Dominique took a 4-cube when the score was 1-0 for Guy, she had very very little chance to win the race, she should then have redoubled to 8 but lost the game anyway. This redouble (by the leader) is interesting. If the trailer takes, she should of course send it back to 8 for the match. If she passes, she will be behind 3-0 with 25% match winning chances, so she has to be able to win 25% cubeless to justify taking. That was not the case in our match.

More Friendly to come: Nor Johan Segers (in the semi-final) neither Toon Van Herreweghen (in the final) managed to hit lucky Guy when he had to leave a blot in some crucial endpositions. Two 5-1 victories sealed his first place.

In the consolation (playing to 3), Johan beat Patrick Bocken for the second time that evening to clinch the 3rd place.

In the last chance (playing to 1), Marc Van Haverbeke beat Zsolt Tasnadi right at midnight.

The way home was not easy without snowtires but the 1st Brussels Friendly was certainly a succes. The 2nd Brussels Friendly is to be expected on Friday 4th February (to be confirmed) at Tennis-, Hockey- and Bridgeclub Orée, drève des Brûlés 59 in Woluwe - Brussels. Thank you for joining us.

At some common match scores, a particular situation called Gammon-Go versus Gammon-Save occurs. To practice the special kind of checker play required at these match scores, a Gammon-Go/Gammon-Save Theme Tournament was played.

Suppose the score is 3-4 (Crawford) in a 5-point match. Crawford means that in the next game, the doubling cube cannot be used.

For the player with 3 points, called the trailer, the chance to win the match after the next game is as follows:

• Wins gammon, 5-4: 100 % (the trailer wins the match)
• Wins single, 4-4: 50 % (double match point)
• Loses (single or gammon), 3-5: 0 % (the trailer loses the match)

The trailer plays Gammon-Go: he very much wants to win a gammon but does not care about avoiding to lose a gammon. The difference between winning gammon (100 %) and winning single (50 %) is equal to the difference between winning single (50 %) and losing (0 %). There is no extra cost for losing a gammon.

For the player with 4 points, called the leader, the chance to win the match after the next game is as follows:

• Wins (single or gammon), 5-3: 100 % (the leader wins the match)
• Loses single, 4-4: 50 % (double match point)
• Loses gammon, 4-5: 0 % (the leader loses the match)

The leader plays Gammon-Save: he does not care about winning a gammon but very much wants to avoid losing a gammon. The difference between winning (100 %) and losing single (50 %) is equal to the difference between losing single (50 %) and losing a gammon (0 %). There is no extra reward for winning a gammon.

Checker play at gammon-go and gammon-save is quite different from checker play at other match scores. The gammon-go player likes blitzes, priming games, and back games with augmented gammon chances. He disdains running games and holding games with few gammon opportunities and he cares less about making a high anchor. At gammon-save, the situation is completely reversed. The difference can already be felt at the opening move, for instance after an opening roll of 43. According to recent roll-outs, at gammon-go, a 43 opening roll should be played aggressively, bringing two men down from the midpoint. At gammon-save, the same move would be a grave error; instead, split the back men to try for a high anchor.

Gammon-Go versus Gammon-Save occurs at other match scores as well: 2-1 (Crawford) in a 3-point match, 6-5 (Crawford) in a 7-point match, etc. Ignoring backgammons and free drops, the situation also occurs for instance at 4-2 (post-Crawford) or 4-1 (post-Crawford) in a 5-point match, at 3-1 with the cube at 2 in a 5-point match, etc.

The Gammon-Go/Gammon Save Theme Tournament works as follows:

• Everybody plays twice against everybody else, one time as trailer (3-4 Crawford, gammon-go) and the other time as leader (4-3 Crawford, gammon-save).
• Per game, a player earns 100 %, 50 %, or 0 %, according to the (virtual) match winning percentage after that game, as explained above.
• In the end, players are ranked according to the total of all the percentages they have earned.

Interestingly, for a given player, the average percentage obtained per game is a raw estimate of that player's true match winning chances at the given match score. Assuming a 20 % gammon rate, the benchmark is 30 % match winning chances at gammon-go and 70 % match winning chances at gammon-save.

Home advantage does not seem to count in Backgammon: after four 4 Cubes confrontations between Hasselt and Leuven, two in Hasselt and two in Leuven, each time with the right to challenge BBBC Ghent at stake, the visiting club has always returned victoriously. Once more, Leuven can go to Ghent to try again after the unsuccessful mission in July (report). Note that Ghent has been enjoying the title of Belgian's Best Backgammon Club now for almost 10 months already, a title which they have had to defend twice.

Time for those Cubes to return home...

After having lost all matches at the 1st October club tournament, Toon Van Herreweghen had to concede the first place on the rating list to Hasselt's BBT-champ Luc Palmans. Two weeks later, however, Toon convincingly recaptured the lead by winning 4 out 5 five-point matches.

Time for another 4 Cubes clash between Leuven and Hasselt?

After the unsuccessful attack on the 4 Cubes in Ghent on July 6 (report), Leuven had to confirm its Challenger status by holding off Hasselt's Gammonators. Their team, with Amstergammoner Nardy Pillards on their side, proved too strong. After 14 matches, Hasselt had already won the confrontation with a convincing 10-4 lead, and the Leuven players forfeited the final two matches, hoping (in vain) to take revenge in a massive chouette. Congratulations to the Gammonators for this fine revenge for their defeat in Hasselt to Leuven on May 21 (report)!

Today, our rating list has moved to a new location. Henceforth, the list will load faster and down time will be strongly reduced.

Recall that our rating list has been initiated by Gerhard Koops back in 2005, who maintained it manually in a spreadsheet.

In the summer of 2008, the rating list was reimplemented by Toon Van Herreweghen: Bigelo was born. The rating list was now based on a database that could be managed in real time via the internet via an ingenious Ruby application.

The server being a small home computer with a wireless internet connection however, accessibility was not always optimal. This problem has been solved now by Toon too, who has moved the list to a new, professional host.

It is hard to truly realize the hard work done by Gerhard and Toon in the past few years. But what we certainly can do is to profit from their work by studying hard and enjoying ourselves climbing up on the rating list!

After the 4-12 beating by Ghent on January 29 (report), Leuven was determined to try its best to reconquer the 4 Cubes. However, the Ghent team proved too strong, for they managed to hold the fort by winning 9-7. To celebrate their victory, they treated their visitors on a bottle of champagne. Congratulations to Ghent and many thanks for the generous hospitality!

Quite remarkably, the 4 players that represented our club were all different from the ones of January. This is a good sign for our future!

Two new players, Elif Memis (Turkey) and John Marsman (the Netherlands), played with the cube for the first time, and managed pretty well, beating some top-ranked players.

By also winning the second May Leuven club evening (on May 14, he won two tournaments on one evening, see report), Patrick Dewilde finally broke through the 1600 rating barrier. (Results of the 5th Ghent Open are not yet taken into account.) The closest he came so far was on April 24, 2009, when he peaked at 1597.92. "What and how have you been studying lately?" did I ask him afterwards.

"Mainly checker play," answered Patrick, "notably Bill Robertie's excellent 501 Essential Backgammon Problems."

On February 26, the Gammonators Hasselt had snatched away the Challenger status from Leuven with a 6-10 victory (report). However, Hasselt's challenge to Belgium's Best Backgammon Club (BBBC) Ghent on April 23 just fell short of success: an 8-8 draw, with home advantage for the BBBC (report).

Now, Leuven was eager to seize the opportunity to climb up the ladder again. The battle took place in the lively Friday night atmosphere of the pub Cambrinus, home of Hasselt's gammonators. The Hasselt team consisted of the same four players as in their previous two confrontations. In the Leuven team, there was one newcomer: Marc Van Haverbeke. Of the 16 (= 4 times 4) matches played, the Leuven players managed to win 9, sufficient for the victory.

In the next episode of the battle for the 4 Cubes, Leuven will challenge Ghent in an attempt to bring the cubes home again. Recall that on January 29, it was Ghent that took away those cubes from Leuven with a crushing 4-12 victory (report). Time to put things straight again!

After a poll organised on our Yahoo group, it was decided to play a 1-point match tournament, round Robin (= everybody plays everybody). Organiser Patrick Dewilde convincingly won the first one, being the only player with the highest score (4/5). As the tournament was over quickly, there was time left to play a second one. Here Patrick and Zsolt Tasnadi ended with the same score (4/5), the mutual result then being the tie-breaker, in favour of Patrick. Congratulations!

The club of Leuven, that already lost the 4 Cubes to Ghent on January 29 (see results), had to defend its Challenger status against the Gammonators Hasselt. However, even the home advantage did not prove sufficient. Thanks to remarkable achievements by the two lowest ranked Gammonators Ronny Conaert and Laiky Kyrkos, Hasselt beat Leuven 10 to 6.

Thanks to this victory, Hasselt has the right (and moral obligation) to challenge Ghent to defend the 4 Cubes and its title of Belgium's Best Backgammon Club.

In the rating list, Ronny Conaert makes a giant leap upwards and enters the top-5, passing his club fellow Walter Meuwis.
