2010

(6 July 2010)

After the 4-12 beating by Ghent on January 29 (report), Leuven was determined to try its best to reconquer the 4 Cubes. However, the Ghent team proved too strong, for they managed to hold the fort by winning 9-7. To celebrate their victory, they treated their visitors on a bottle of champagne. Congratulations to Ghent and many thanks for the generous hospitality!

Quite remarkably, the 4 players that represented our club were all different from the ones of January. This is a good sign for our future!

Main (5p) / Consolation (3p) / Last chance (1p).
9 participants.

Congratulations to Guy Van Middelem!

Two new players, Elif Memis (Turkey) and John Marsman (the Netherlands), played with the cube for the first time, and managed pretty well, beating some top-ranked players.

Results:

  • Main: 1. Guy Van Middelem; 2. Marc Van Haverbeke
  • Consolation: 3. Toon Van Herreweghen; 4. Elif Memis
  • Last chance: 5/6. John Marsman and Alain Chif (final not played)
  • Unranked: Johan Segers, Lieve Stroobants, and Simon Woss
(11 June 2010)

As in May (report), the format of the 2nd-Friday-of-June event was decided by a poll on our Yahoo group. This time, the votes were in favour of a jackpot event: short single-eliminiation tournaments, 7-point matches, the winner takes it all.

In total, 2 four-person jackpots were played, the first one won by Marc Van Haverbeke, the second one by Toon Van Herreweghen. Congratulations!

1st Jackpot:

Marc VAN HAVERBEKE
Toon VAN HERREWEGHEN -----> Marc
                                 ----> Marc
Lieve STROOBANTS     -----> Lieve

2nd Jackpot:

Guy VAN MIDDELEM  -------> Guy

(28 May 2010)

By also winning the second May Leuven club evening (on May 14, he won two tournaments on one evening, see report), Patrick Dewilde finally broke through the 1600 rating barrier. (Results of the 5th Ghent Open are not yet taken into account.) The closest he came so far was on April 24, 2009, when he peaked at 1597.92. (In the rating list, click on a player's name to see his or her full history.)

"What and how have you been studying lately?" did I ask him afterwards.

"Mainly checker play," answered Patrick, "notably Bill Robertie's excellent 501 Essential Backgammon Problems."

Curious to see him progress when he also starts to study match equity tables!

On February 26, the Gammonators Hasselt had snatched away the Challenger status from Leuven with a 6-10 victory (report). However, Hasselt's challenge to Belgium's Best Backgammon Club (BBBC) Ghent on April 23 just fell short of success: an 8-8 draw, with home advantage for the BBBC (report).

Now, Leuven was eager to seize the opportunity to climb up the ladder again. The battle took place in the lively Friday night atmosphere of the pub Cambrinus, home of Hasselt's gammonators. The Hasselt team consisted of the same four players as in their previous two confrontations. In the Leuven team, there was one newcomer: Marc Van Haverbeke. Of the 16 (= 4 times 4) matches played, the Leuven players managed to win 9, sufficient for the victory.

In the next episode of the battle for the 4 Cubes, Leuven will challenge Ghent in an attempt to bring the cubes home again. Recall that on January 29, it was Ghent that took away those cubes from Leuven with a crushing 4-12 victory (report). Time to put things straight again!

After a poll organised on our Yahoo group, it was decided to play a 1-point match tournament, round Robin (= everybody plays everybody). Organiser Patrick Dewilde convincingly won the first one, being the only player with the highest score (4/5). As the tournament was over quickly, there was time left to play a second one. Here Patrick and Zsolt Tasnadi ended with the same score (4/5), the mutual result then being the tie-breaker, in favour of Patrick. Congratulations!

Despite a great 4-0 start in three of the four matches, Walter Meuwis eventually lost all four of them. Johan Vervust was the only Ghent player to win more than two matches, thereby providing his team with the crucial 8th point to keep the draw and the 4 Cubes.

The club of Leuven, that already lost the 4 Cubes to Ghent on January 29 (see results), had to defend its Challenger status against the Gammonators Hasselt. However, even the home advantage did not prove sufficient. Thanks to remarkable achievements by the two lowest ranked Gammonators Ronny Conaert and Laiky Kyrkos, Hasselt beat Leuven 10 to 6.

Thanks to this victory, Hasselt has the right (and moral obligation) to challenge Ghent to defend the 4 Cubes and its title of Belgium's Best Backgammon Club.

In the rating list, Ronny Conaert makes a giant leap upwards and enters the top-5, passing his club fellow Walter Meuwis.

December 2009
Lucas Van Langendonck

Alex Siccard Ten participants in November's club tournament, the last of which, Alex Siccard, arrived at 8:45 PM only. Thanks to the flexible tournament format (progressive consolation), he could still join. His belated participation did not go by unnoticed, for after eliminating the winner of the Antwerp Open 2009 (Luc Palmans), the title holder of the Benelux Masters 2009 (your humble reporter), and Daniel De Amici, he pushed through all the way to the final, in which he overtook mass-backgame sensei Patrick Dewilde (in a money game later that night, Patrick managed to gammon me from a 5-4-2 backgame). In the rating list, Alex jumps from 1503 to 1561.

We were delighted to be able to welcome two new players in our club: Luca Borselli and Simon Boss, two colleagues of Marc Van Haverbeke. Simon won the final of the consolation against Guy Van Middelem, who himself had had the opportunity to beat Alain Chif twice, first in the main and then a second time in the consolation.

The 7th edition of the French Open, organised by the World Backgammon Association, took place from October 28 to November 1, 2009, in the Casino Barrière d'Enghien-les-Bains. There were three levels: Intermediate (100 euro entry fee), Advanced (350 euro entry fee) and Masters (775 euro entry fee). Guy Van Middelem reached the final of the main flight in the Advanced level (24 players), losing only to winner Thomas Löw from Germany. Guy's fine achievement confirms that his recent victories in our club are not just due to good luck. Congratulations, Guy!

Former World Champion Philip Vischjager (Monte Carlo, 2006) from the Netherlands reached the semi-finals of the main flight in the Masters.

Guy Van Middelem reports:

  • Masters voor de kampioenen 900,- € (78 inschrijvingen);
  • Advanced voor goede tot topspelers 450,- € (24 inschrijvingen);

October's Quarter Entry Night: the Jackpot Format.
Delayed September Final Ends in Joker Fest
23 October 2009

A mini-jackpot is a tournament between 4 players with two semi-finals and a final, yielding a single winner. At our October monthly club evening, we played a set of such jackpots at three different entry fees: 2.5 euro, 9 euro, and 35 euro. The winner of a jackpot could choose between the following alternatives:

  1. cashing the money in the pot, minus a contribution for the club;
  2. in case of the two smaller jackpots, a free entry for a jackpot one level up, minus a smaller contribution for the club;
  3. the entry free for one of the two levels in the Leuven Open (14/11/2009), without a contribution for the club.
The jackpot format worked well. Advantages of the system:
  • Players choose the stake for which they wish to play and the moment at which they wish to cash.
  • For a entry fee as low as 2.5 euro, players can already compete for a big prize.
  • New jackpots being started over the course of the whole evening, waiting times are typically short, with most players playing most of the time.

But of course, the true success of the evening was due to the participants, among which mister A. Soltani and his wife Fakhri, who visited us for the first time, and Hasselt's Gammonators Walter Meuwis and Laiky Kyrkos. A total of six jackpots were completed, two at each entry fee level. Alain Chif won the first 2.5 euro jackpot and upgraded to the second 9 euro jackpot, where he was stopped in first round by Miss F. Soltani, who was defeated herself in the final by Sassan Kachanian. The first 9 euro jackpot was won by Walter Meuwis, who promoted to the 35 euro jackpot, fought his way to the final, only to see his dreams of an almost free entry to the Leuven Open being shattered by Guy Van Middelem. The first 35 euro jackpot ended after a long struggle in Laiky Kyrkos defeating Mister A. Soltani. The last 2.5 euro jackpot was won by Guy Van Middelem too, who decided to convert his prize into a free entry for a 9 euro jackpot on our next club evening of Friday 13 November.

Meanwhile, Alain Chif and Toon Van Herreweghen still had to play their final of the September tournament. Their 5-point match culminated into a double match point game that ended in a joker fest, each player seeing his game/match winning chances hopping over 75 percent more than once in the course of a few turns. The one to roll the last double was Toon, thereby finally claiming the September title.

September club tournament ends in cliff hanger
25 September 2009

Five people showed up for the September club tournament: Alain, Patrick, Johan, Guy, and Toon. The tournament format was round-robin, 5-point matches, winner takes it all, with ties being resolved by an extra match if needed.

Around midnight, Alain had completed his four matches, losing only to Toon, for a total of 3/4. Toon, having lost no match so far, still had to play to Guy, a victory ensuring him the first prize. Kingmaker Guy, however, for whom the match had no importance anymore, successfully fought for his honour, leaving the final score tied between Alain and Toon. As it was already after one o'clock AM by then, the tie-break between Alain and Toon had to be postponed until next month. <

The BG clubs of Ghent and Leuven are happy to welcome the Gammonators Hasselt in the 4 Cubes Challenge. The right to challenge Belgium's Best Backgammon Club shall from now on be reserved for the club with the status of Challenger. In order to become Challenger itself, the third club first has to defeat the current Challenger. In their confrontation, the home advantage and the draw advantage are for the Challenger. In addition, the winner of a confrontation BBBC versus Challenger or Challenger versus other is granted an immunity period of 4 weeks during which the winner cannot be challenged to put its title of BBBC or Challenger at stake.

Youngest player ever in July tournament
24 July 2009

Dominique's daughter Laure, 12 years old, who had sent Tom to the consolation, had to be stopped in the main by losing finalist Alex. Next she suffered a rather narrow loss in the consolation from losing finalist Patrick. In the last chance, Tom took revenge for his first-round defeat by sending her home -- it was already after midnight after all.

Congratulations to Guy for his first tournament victory!

Results:

  • Main: 1. Guy Van Middelem, 2. Alex Siccard

  • Unranked: Dominique Stuyck and her daughter Laure

12 June 2009

Not discouraged by their defeat on May 15, a team of four Ghent players made a second and successful attempt to conquer the 4 Cubes and the BBBC title from Leuven. They had to confront four Leuven players in a series of 4 times 4 matches, of which they had to win a strict majority, the home advantage being for the title holder.

Ghent started well with 3 to 1 in the first round, but then Leuven managed to draw in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, so that at the beginning of the 4th and final round the score was 7 to 5 for Ghent. Since the challenger has to win at least 9 of the 16 matches to conquer the title, Ghent had to win two more matches, while Leuven had to win 3 of the 4 remaining matches to keep the title at home.

The final round started great for Leuven with Toon Van Herreweghen and Sassan Kachanian beating Bert Van Kerckhove and Geert Van Der Stricht respectively, temporarily drawing the score at 7-7. At this point the challengers from Ghent faced the difficult task of having to win the remaining two matches. A late hit in a post-Crawford game allowed Ghent player Johan Vervust to escape from a match-losing doubled gammon and instead winning his match against Patrick Dewilde, bringing the score to 8-7 for Ghent.

All now depended on the match between the two team captains, Michel Lamote and Johan Segers. Despite a quick opening lead of 4-0, after a few games Michel found himself trailing 5-6 Crawford. He managed to win the Crawford game, however, so that at 6-6 the double match point game would decide upon the final result of the encounter Ghent-Leuven. In this game, which you can replay below, Johan made some weak opening moves, quickly committing himself to an unfavorable deuce-point game. In this game he never really got a chance, and at 3am+, Michel broke contact and ensured the victory for his team.

A quest to reconquer those Cubes is planned at the end of the summer. A match length of 5 (rather than 7) seems more appropriate if early-morning matches are to be avoided.

Remarkably, Toon managed to repeat his May achievement of winning all of his 4 matches. Below you can replay the second half of his match against Michel.
